OGDEN — Sometimes the right space is a small one.
That’s what the owner of Mason Jar Coffee Roasters is saying about his new space in the lobby of The Parlour building at 2562 Washington Blvd.
Thomas Kiernan has run a successful coffee roasting shop at 365 E. 5600 South in Washington Terrace for four years. He’s now thrilled to be moving to downtown Ogden.
“We’ve wanted to move to downtown for a while,” he said Wednesday after his first day of soft openings. “This is the right space.”
Wednesday and the rest of the week, Kiernan is giving away free coffee, mainly espresso, just before noon at his shop. He’ll also be open Friday, March 4, during the Downtown Ogden First Friday Art Stroll.
The shop officially opens for business 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, March 7.
The store had many visitors for its debut Wednesday.
“We had lots of customers from before,” said Clayton Rich, a barista at Mason Jar Coffee Roasters. “There was a steady flow of people.”
Kiernan, who is a coffee roaster as well as the owner, said he feels at home at his new location.
“The right kind of energy is in this building,” he said.
He plans to change the way his shop presents what it does, now in it’s confined space, by trimming the menu. All the coffee Kiernan sells are blends he has roasted himself and he said he will be intentional about what brewed flavors he highlights each day.
“We’re going to focus on what we do,” he said. “We’ll have a new focus, a new energy. Downtown is the place to be right now.”
“We are being very specific on the kinds of coffees we start with and highlight all the way through,” he said.
He wants potential customers to know his shop is not just another Starbucks. “We’ve got a unique job to do,” he said.
So far, there are no signs on the building to alert visitors to Mason Jar’s arrival, but plans are to add them soon.
