New WinCo in Layton (finally) set to open

LAYTON — A new WinCo Foods is set to open this week in Layton, the grocery store chain announced.

According to a Facebook event, the Layton WinCo, located at 200 S. Fort Lane, will open at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and will be open 24 hours a day.

Opening the 85,000-square-foot store has been a long process for the city of Layton.

In 2013, Layton Mayor Bob Stevenson visited WinCo’s Boise, Idaho, headquarters to lobby for a store. A year later, the Layton City Council approved the WinCo Foods store.

However, a series of complications surrounding utilities and infrastructure negotiations caused delays, and construction on the store didn’t begin until spring 2016.

A 85,000-square-foot WinCo grocery store will anchor a 22-acre commercial development in old downtown Layton. The store is set to open Thursday, Feb. 2, at 200 S. Fort Lane.

City officials initially hoped to have the store open by the end of 2016, according to previous reporting, but in October, that estimated opening was pushed back to February 2017

Kent Andersen, Layton deputy director of community and economic development, said Layton will retain 1 percent in sales tax revenue from the store, as well as property tax revenue.

Other businesses, including Cafe Sabor and a Young Kia dealership, have opened nearby on Main Street, and an Intermountain Medical Center is expected to open in 2018

Established in 1967, WinCo was once called Waremart. WinCo is a privately held employee-owned business with more than 100 stores throughout the U.S. West. Ogden and Roy also have WinCo Food stores.
