5 unique margarita recipes for celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a twist

A classic margarita is good, but it can get old. Why not give your drink a twist with lavender, coconut or even Sriracha? 

This Cinco de Mayo — or any day of the year, if you please — try one of these five unique margarita recipes.

CHOCOLATE MARGARITA

From: Home Wet Bar

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ½ ounces orange liqueur
  • 1 ounce Kahlua
  • 1 ounce half-and-half
  • 1 ½ tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • Oreo cookies
  • Ice

Instructions:

Place Oreo cookies in a sandwich bag and crush. Put crushed Oreos aside.

Combine liquid ingredients in a shaker, and stir in chocolate syrup. Add ice to shaker, and shake well.

Moisten cocktail glass lightly, and rim with crushed Oreo. Pour into rimmed glass, and enjoy.

STRAWBERRY SRIRACHA MARGARITA

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • ½ cup tequila
  • ¼ cup Cointreau (or other orange flavored liquor)
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar
  • ½ teaspoon Sriracha
  • 2 cups ice

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a blender, blend until smooth. Pour into a sugar-rimmed margarita glass.

VANILLA PEAR MARGARITA

From: Best Friends for Frosting

Ingredients: 

  • 4 ounces pear juice
  • 2 ounces 100 percent agave silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Fresh vanilla bean seeds from a 3″ piece of vanilla bean
  • Drizzle of honey (about ¼ to ½ teaspoon)
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Cinnamon sugar mix for rim

Instructions: 

Run a slice of lemon along the rim of a glass, and then coat rim in cinnamon sugar. Fill the glass with ice.

Combine all ingredients except for the cinnamon sugar in a cocktail shaker, and shake until combined. Pour over ice, and garnish with a slice of fresh pear or vanilla bean.

LAVENDER MARGARITA

From: Cooking Channel

Ingredients: 

  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • ½ ounce Cointreau
  • 1 ounce lavender simple syrup
  • ½ lime
  • Sugar
  • Dried lavender

Instructions: 

In a shaker, combine silver tequila, Cointreau, simple syrup and the juice of half a lime. Let the mixture sit.

On a plate, mix the sugar and dried lavender, and use it to rim the outside of a rocks glass.

Fill the glass with ice. Shake and strain the contents of the strainer into the glass.

COCONUT CREAMSICLE MARGARITA

From: How Sweet It Is

Ingredients: 

  • 2 ounces Grand Marnier
  • 2 ounces orange juice
  • 1 ½ ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 ounce coconut water
  • 1 ounce canned light coconut milk
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • Unsweetened, shredded and toasted coconut for glass rims
  • Orange and lime slices for serving

Instructions: 

To rim glasses, fill a plate with coconut. Rub honey or leftover frosting on the rim, then place rim on the plate to coat with coconut. Fill glass with ice.

Combine Grand Marnier, orange juice, tequila, lime juice, coconut water, coconut milk and simple syrup in a shaker, and shake well for 30 seconds. Pour over ice and garnish with wedges of orange and limes.
